This afternoon our kids' Christmas Vacation begins. I am so excited, and I'm not even one of the kids at school. I know that some families, eagerly await for school to fire back up, as so much time with their kids is hard. I am very thankful that our kids are fun and easy, and a great joy to be around. Sure, they will wear me out, but whats new?
Besides, we have almost two weeks to not have to think about homework. I'm so excited as homework isn't just a pain for kids. It sucks for parents too. I personally think after 7 hours at school, kids should never have homework, but so far the rest of the world hasn't joined onto my train of thought....yet. Its just that I have one honor roll student and one amazing first grade reader, who had to completely learn a new language two years ago, and they are doing stupendous, so why all the homework. Anyways, besides reveling in the lack of homework, I have two weeks that I don't have to get out my cattle prod to get the children out the door in the morning, and I can go back being a bedtime slacker and letting my kids stay up way too late. Hmm, there could be a link between my bedtime slackerness and the morning cattle prod, but who knows :)
In addition to all this merriment, we are heading into town on Christmas Eve to celebrate with my dad. My dad's church always has the best Christmas Eve service, or at least by my kids' standards. They have a time at the beginning of the service where the kids get to come up front and hear a little story and receive a little trinket, and to top it off, the service concludes with the annual holiday light saber fest. You probably know this time as the Candelight Christmas Eve Service. As a mom of two busy, busy little boys, an open flame and a church full of Aqua Net scares the crap out of me. To them it is the highlight of the year. Its all in your perspective.
On Christmas day, my family is coming to the house for dinner. Of course our dishwasher just broke, but with a quick Wal-mart run, and some Santa Paper Plates and Red Solo Cups, we'll be back in business. With a little holiday cheer in the Red Solo Cups, we'll be sure to put the fun into dysfunctional.
Our Christmas break plans, also include a play date or two. I plan on starting a baby scrapbook for Gabriella, and I realized I'm heading to Haiti in one month and I have not started to fill my bags at all. We did buy new backpacks, as my last one died in Haiti. Apparently, if you pack enough craft stuff for several hundred kids and enough food to keep yourself going for weeks, your backpack falls apart. They just don't make those free backpacks from the bank like they used to. I can only open so many new accounts to get the free bags, so I figured it was time to pony up and buy a decent backpack, which was striking fear in my heart as a good backpack is expensive. We totally hit the jackpot at our local sporting goods store(read 70 miles away) and found some great backpacks for half off. Now, I have the kevlar re-enforced beast that I can cram hundreds of pounds of weight inside and pull the tabs on the side squishing it down enough to get through airport security looking exactly like my one personal item. Sure I have a few smashed granola bars when its all said and done, but that's the price you pay.
Anyways, Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you have a great and blessed holiday.
